Eaves Family
This is my "thinking" page. I am thinking
outloud and trying to figure out who the parents of Mary Ann Eaves (my
gg-grandmother) were.
Mary Ann M. Eaves [as her
marriage license lists her name] was born
in 1837, in Illinois, maybe Macoupin Co.
--The 1860 census lists Mary Ann as born in Illinois.
--On the 1880 census, daughter Matilda says her "mother" was born in
Missouri, but she probably meant her step-mother, Caroline Webb
(William Tatum's 3rd wife).
--One of William Tatum's grandsons said that one of William's wives was
from Illinois, "across from Cape Girardeau". This must be Mary Ann, but
I can't make the "across from Cape Girardeau" thing work.
--There were some Eaves in Union Co, IL (near Cape Girardeau) &
Madison Co, IL (near St. Louis).

She must have been on the 1840 & 1850 Illinois census with her
parents (see census records below the line).
Her parents were probably William
Owen Eaves (b 1817 Madison Co, IL; d
1851) and Eva Margaret
Whiteside, married Aug 17, 1837 Madison Co, IL.
Their marriage is listed in the Illinois
State Marr Index:
EVES, William O. & WHITESIDE, Margaret - 08/17/1837
Madison Co.
William Owen Eaves was the son of Benjamin
Eaves.
I need to locate a will for William Owen Eaves (probably should be in
Madison Co, IL). I can't find
him on the 1850 census, but he is supposed to have died in 1851.
He doesn't seem to be in Missouri either in 1850, even though Mary Ann
married in
Stoddard Co, MO in 1859. By 1860 Margaret was remarried and living in
Madison Co, IL. Margaret died in 1871 in Madison Co, IL.
There are 3 Eaves wills

The family of Wm. Owen and Eva Margaret Eaves were not found
there. Since their children, Mary Ann, James, Bart & Thomas
were later in
Stoddard Co, I thought maybe the family had moved to Missouri by 1850,
but they are not in the 1850 census of Stoddard Co, MO either.
No Eaves in 1850 Alexander Co, IL
William Owen is supposed to have died in 1851. Don't know where
he is buried; I assume somewhere in Madison Co., though his father and
sister were buried in Macoupin Co.
Margaret married Jubilee Posey in 1854 in Madison Co, IL
Mary Ann married William Tatum in Stoddard Co, Mo in 1859.

Macoupin County, IL marriages:
EAVES, Noah H & ATTERBERRY, Jane Mrs - 10/22/1854
Mary Ann was 22 when she married in Stoddard
Co, Mo in April,
1859 to William J. Tatum. See a copy of their marriage record.
Since they were married in Stoddard County, Mary Ann must have been
living there already. However, if her mother is Eva Margaret
(Whiteside) Eaves Posey, she was in Madison Co, IL in 1860.
When William was 19 he had married Susannah Taylor, who died
and Jan. 1858 and was buried in the Old Idalia-Lewis cemetery east of
Bloomfield, Stoddard Co., Mo. So William must have lived
around Bloomfield.
William's grandson said that William worked at a sawmill in Sikeston
when he was 17, and that Mary Ann came from Illinois across the river
from Cape Girardeau.
William was about 21 when he married Mary Ann. He had been single
for over a year before he married 2nd.
Mary Ann's brothers, James and William Bartlett
(& maybe Thomas) must have followed Mary Ann to Stoddard Co, Mo. or
they were already there.

Ann was 28 when she died Sept 1865, in Stoddard Co, Mo.,

the birth of her second child, Arabella "Bettie" (born Sept. 3).
There was a Thomas Eaves (maybe Mary Ann's brother) who was divorced
from his wife Agnes, in
Sept 1860, in Stoddard County, then he married there July 27, 1867 to
Bethelana A. Reed.

[There was another William
Bartlett Eaves who died in Dent Co in 1864 & his son James was

in Stoddard Co]
- James and Bart were the children of William Owen Eaves (born Nov. 12,
1817 in Madison Co, IL) and Eva Margaret Whiteside (Eva's mother's name
was Mary Smith). Mary Ann may have been another child of Wm Owen.

JOHN EAVES FAMILY
John Eaves and two sons came from England in 1736. His son, William,
moved to Northumberton County, Virginia, in 1736. [should be 1636] William's son,
Graves
Eaves, Sr. and wife Elizabeth Matthews, and son Mark, moved to Chester
County, South Carolina in 1798. [Graves
Sr. died in 1746 in VA] Mark's son Thomas
married Polly Johns in 1807. Soon afterward he and his brother and
family moved by flatboat to Tennessee. Thomas settled on the Tennessee
River in what is now Meigs County. The brother went to what is now Polk
County on the Hiwassee River
Graves
Eaves, Sr was born about 1675 and died in 1746. He left a will in
Brunswick Co., VA. He received a land grant from King George III in
1728 in Brunswick Co., VA, and also received other land grants. He
married a daughter of Goodlove Matthews, probably Elizabeth Matthews,
shown by a deed from Mrs. Matthews to her son-in-law, Graves Eaves.
Elizabeth Matthews was supposedly born about 1679 in Northumberland
Co., VA, and died about 1745 in VA. Graves Eaves sold his farm in
Northumberland Co., VA in 1726 and moved to Brunswick Co., VA. All
their children were born in Northumberland Co., VA.
Graves
Eaves, Jr. was born about 1724 in Northumberland Co., VA, and died
about 1810 in Rutherford Co., NC. He married Martha (or Nancy) Yancy
(or Yancey), daughter of Elizabeth Ann Thornton and Capt. James Yancy,
about 1751 in Rutherford Co., NC. She was born about 1735 in Hanover
Co., VA, and died after 1775 in Rutherford Co., NC. Their first child
was born in Brunswick Co., VA, the next 8 in Granville Co., NC, and the
last in Tyron, probably Rutherford Co. (now Polk Co.), NC.
