John Prewitt


John Pruitt was born abt 1730-36 in Henrico Co, Va. (Goochland Co was later formed from Henrico Co)


Douglas Register of Goochland Co, Va:

1758, Aug. 9, Obadiah Addison Pruitt born in St. James Parish to John Pruitt and Alice Addison. He was baptized on April 1, 1759 (Douglas Register, p. 279)


John Prewit on Mar 26, 1776 of Goochland conveyed by deed of gift to son Abram Prewit, 120 acres of land "being part of the tract where I now live in Goochland county, called 'the old place' and bounded by John Bolling, John Harbers?, Benj Easts and my land. (Book 11, p 100)

1782-1878 Va. Tay Payers - John Pruitt, 1 poll, 5 slaves.


John's first will dated Mar 1776 leaves everything to his son Abraham. John could not sign his name.

A later Will dated 11 Mar 1788 leaves most of his property to son Harwood.

Proved Nov 18, 1788. Theo Bates goes surety bond for widow. (Will recorded Will Bk 16,  p. 346)


They had 7 children:

1. Nancy Prewitt, m 1773 to Ben East

2. John Prewitt Jr., died before 1788

3. Obediah Addison Prewitt, b 1755; m Frances Jarrett and Nancy Lovell

4. Abraham Prewitt, m 1783 to Ann Davidson

5. Meredith Field Prewitt, b 1767 [There is a marriage in St. Clair Co, IL (prob near St. Louis) Aug 22, 1808 of Fields Pruitt and Hannah Hill. Don't know if it's the same man.]

6. Harwood Prewitt, b 1769; received land and plantation after his mother’s death.  (will? ID#22608)
