David Spurlock, Sr

son of John Spurlock, Jr

He might have been David Drury. His father John had a brother named David and maybe one named Drury, and I think it is possible that John’s grandfather was Drury Spurlock (though not proven). This David had a son and a grandson named David Drury.

Evidently David moved to Kentucky before he was married with his father and brothers, between 1794 and 1799.

This David may be his uncle: On a list of Kentucky Militia, "Commissioned Officers, 1799-1804" was "David Spurlock, Lieutenant, 56th Regiment."
This following entry was from Annals of Southwest Virginia 1769-1800 by Summers; though it doesn't seem likely to be the same David since he would have been only 11 years old! It's more likely that it was his uncle.
Dec. 1, 1794 "David Spurlock was appointed overseer of the road from the Merry Fork of Greasy Creek to the Grayson Line." (George Hancock was mentioned in the same record; probably Susanna's uncle)

He was 21 when he married
Susanna Hancock about 1804.

Since her father died in Virginia, it’s likely that he went back to Virginia where he met and married her. The early Kentucky settlers had a close relationship with Virginia and made frequent trips back.

Susanna’s father, John Hancock, had died in 1802, leaving her a portion of his estate.

Two years later she married David Spurlock. They moved to Floyd Co, KY to be with the rest of his Spurlock family.

Susanna Hancock’s father, John Hancock  had a farm in Virginia that bordered Monticello. Thomas Jefferson’s father, Peter, had surveyed Hancock’s land. The John Hancock family were good friends of Thomas Jefferson and family stories from 2 different lines say that Hancock helped Jefferson with writing the Declaration of Independence. (Perhaps he had a suggestion. Or maybe he read it for him.)

John Hancock had 2 brothers who were Kentucky explorers: William and Stephen Hancock. They settled in Boonesboro, Kentucky with Daniel Boone in 1777 (2 years after Boone established that fort). In 1778 Boone along with William Hancock and a few other men were captured at Blue Licks by the Indians and taken to Ohio. Boone escaped 4 months later and ran to 200 miles in 4 days back to Boonesborough to prepare for the Indian attack. William escaped a month later. William’s son Forrest Hancock married Daniel Boone’s cousin’s daughter, Emily. In 1799 the Boones and his Hancock friends moved to St. Charles (beside St. Louis).

In 1807, Lewis and Clark met Forrest Hancock and Joe Dickson who were trapping on the Missouri River in North Dakota. John Colter (traveling with Lewis & Clark, was considered the first “mountain man” and the first white man to enter Yellowstone) agreed to accompany Forrest and Dickson back to explore the Yellowstone basin.

Dec. 1808 David bought 50 acres in Beaver Creek from David Morgan (his sister's father-in-law) for 30 pounds.
August 1810 he and Susanna bought 100 acres on Beaver Creek for $250.
Sept 1815 David bought 75 acres on Beaver Creek from John Spurlock for $5

1810 Kentucky census, Floyd Co, p 11
David Spurlock
1 male 26-44 - David 27

1 male 16-25 - (maybe a brother of David’s or Susannah’s)

1 female under 10 - Rhoda 2

2 houses away is Matthew Spurlock  (30010-3001)
6 children under 10!

In 1820 they were in Floyd Co, Ky. along with 3 other Spurlock heads of families: Matthew & Hiram (David's brothers) and Francis.
David's family on the 1820 census: 220010-02110 - translated to mean:
2 boys under 10 - [Wm. S. (8), David Jr. (2)]
2 boys 10-16 - [Pleasant (15), & ?  ]
1 man 26-45 - [David Sr (37)]
2 girls 10-16 - [Rhoda (12), Frances (6)]
1 girl 16-26 - [?  prob a relative]
1 woman 26-45 - [Susanna]

In 1823 David owned 50 acres on the Louisa Fork of the Sandy River in Floyd County. In 1826 & 1829 he owned 50 acres on the Beaver Creek in Floyd County. Besides being a farmer David was also a carpenter.

Interesting note: There is a David Spurlock and family in the 1830 Fountain County, Indiana, census. It might not be the right David Spurlock, and it’s hard to imagine why he would have taken this route, which was out of the way (from Floyd Co., KY to Crittenden Co., AR), but it is the only David Spurlock in the 1830 census.

About 1830 David took his family down the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers to Arkansas, where they first settled at a point in Arkansas opposite Memphis, Tennessee. Daughter, Rhoda, who had married in 1829, remained in Floyd Co, Ky.

In 1838 David was in Mooney township, Phillips County, Ark. (maybe he lived near the line between Phillips and Crittenden on the east side of Arkansas)

Arkansas land records show land warrants for David Spurlock in Crittenden County, Ark:
Apr 10, 1837 - 40 acres (sec 9, twp/rng 8N 9E)
Jul 28, 1838 - 40 acres (sec 9, twp/rng 8N 9E)
Aug 20, 1838 - 80 acres (sec 9, twp/rng 8N 9E)
Oct 10, 1839 - 160 acres (sec 12, twp/rng 8N

1840 Crittenden Co, Ark, Jasper, p. 38:
Spurlock, David - 00114001 - 00010001
David - 50-60
wife - 50-60 (Susanna)
4 boys - 20-30 (William 28, David Jr 22, Jesse 20)
1 boy, 1 girl - 15-20 (Nancy 18, Robert 17)
1 boy - 10-15 (Johnny 15)
[Pleasant m 1830, Rhoda m 1830, Frances m bef 1840]

In the 1840 Crittenden Co., AR census, David has 55 slaves, so he must have had a big cotton farming operation.

About 1846 family later moved north to the Big Creek area near Center, between Hardy and Evening Shade in Sharp County, Ark. (then included in Izard Co.), (then it was included in Lawrence Co. In 1868 it became Sharp County.)

"The Sharp County Journal, A History of Liberty Hill and King's Mill” by Dr. Audrey Thompson:

"The first Spurlocks to settle in Sharp County were the family of David Spurlock, Sr., in 1846.  He had originally moved to Crittenden County, Arkansas from Kentucky and lived there for several years.  David Spurlock, Sr. died soon after he moved his family to Big Creek near Center, but he left a large family that has spread all over Sharp County and far beyond.  Three of David Spurlock Sr.'s sons that were important to the history of Liberty Hill and King's Mill were John Spurlock, Robert Spurlock and David Spurlock, Jr."

David Sr. was about 63 when he died in 1846 in Evening Shade, Ark. Susanna lived with son, David Jr until her death before 1850. (The 1860 census does not show her living with any of her sons: Pleasant, William, David, Robert, or John.)
